The research for a pigment garden in Almería drew my attention to the presence of prickly pear cacti, infected with a wild form of cochineal. The colonisation of the Americas is inscribed into the very landscape. I learnt that it is problematic to frame plants in terms of ‘native’ and ‘non-native.’ Other plants growing wild in the area included aliaga (a member of genista)&nbsp;and espino de tintes (a member of rhamnus) which were used for yellow dyes historically. Rubia Peregrina, a wild form of madder, grows extensively in the local botanical gardens where I was able to obtain divisions. The roots produce a red, like domesticated madder. Woad was the obvious choice for a blue, since it is adaptable to arid climates due to its long tap root. Although it doesn´t seem to grow wild in the Sierra María los Vélez, is does in the nearby Sierra Nevada. Making Maya blue with it addresses the connections to Mexico demonstrated by the presence of the prickly pear cacti and cochineal. <img width="4608" height="3456" width_o="4608" height_o="3456" found similar traces of colonial relationships. One yellow dye plant that grows extensively in Malmö is Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis). It originally came from North America, where it was an important medicine and dye plant for the indigenous population. It was one of the earliest dye plants to be embraced by European settlers. In Malmö it has become rather invasive, so harvesting it for a dye is a beneficial relationship.&nbsp; Another plant I have found growing locally is weld, a very important dye plant historically in Europe. While many plants produce yellow dyes, the vast majority are highly fugitive. Weld contains luteolin, one of the most lightfast yellow dyes. It likes poor alkali soil that has been disturbed. I have found it growing wild in the industrial areas of Malmö, especially near my studio. The wild form of weld, wild mignonette, also grows locally on old rail tracks. I have experimented with companion planting dye plants with eachother, and other plants such as lettuce, nasturtium, and calendula to see how it prevent pests. Nasturtium and calendula certainly seem to attract aphids and caterpillars away from the woad and japanese indigo. Nitrogen fixing dyer’s greenweed gets overwhelmed by woad. Japanese indigo seems to kill cosmos. It involves a precipitation reaction between potash alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) and an alkali such as potash (potassium carbonate) or soda ash (sodium carbonate).&nbsp; It is a process that only works with mordant dyes - that is to say, dyes that react with mordants such as alum. Different plants require different approaches. Sometimes it is best to soak the plants for days, sometimes it is easily extract with heat in an hour. The tone can be modified by either adding the alum first, for warmer shades or the potash first for cooler shades.&nbsp;The precipitation reaction gives off carbon dioxide and creates a lot of foam. strained off through filter paper or in linen bags, washed to remove excess alum, and dried. The pigments can then ground up fine with a binder such as egg tempera, casein, raw soy milk, or linseed oil. One historically famous pigment in Europe - and used by Swedish peasant painters -&nbsp; is schijt yellow, which was made from buckthorn berries. It is a combination of indigo, extracted from plants, and palygorkite clay, making it an unusual hybrid organic/inorganic pigment. It is a striking turquoise colour that is unusually stable. Overlooked by the Spanish, the technology was eventually lost during the colonial period, only to be retrieved during the late twentieth century.&nbsp; In order to make Maya blue one must first extract the indigo from an indigo-bearing plant, by fermenting the leaves and then aerating the liquid. Maya blue was originally made with the leaves of the tropical indigo native to Central America (xiuquílitl is the Nahuatl name given in the Florentine Codex). I have researched making Maya blue with woad and Japanese indigo which can both be cultivated in Europe. Samples of Mayan blue made from woad were analysed by Professor Antonio Doménech Carbó at the University of Valencia, Spain. <img width="3648" height="2736" width_o="3648" height_o="2736" As with indigo, the palygorskite clay consistently acts as a catalyst to create a colour change and secondary compounds. However, none of the pigments are as stable as Maya blue. Indian craftspeople developed a sophisticated technique of applying&nbsp; mordants and plant dyes, to create beautiful multicoloured patterned cloths. Originally the designs were hand-painted, but later wooden blocks were used. These calicoes arrived to Europe during the end of the 16th century and became immensely popular. By the end of the 17th century printed calicoes had overtaken spices as the main commodity traded by The English East India Trading Company. The threat to the domestic British textile industry was such that the government introduced the Calico Acts of 1700 and 1721 which effectively banned the import of most cotton goods from India (although re-export to other colonies was permitted). Similar prohibitions were introduced in France. Meanwhile, European textile industrialists set about appropriating the Indian techniques, and developing their own calico printing industry which used early industrial techniques such as copper plate printing. Indeed, Foucault writes vividly about the division of labour in the Oberkampf manufactory at Jouy-en-Josas as an example of the disciplining of the workforce in industrial society, in Discipline and Punish (1975). These printed calicoes, produced in early industrial conditions in Europe, with plant dyes which included colonial commodities, became popular elements of Swedish regional costume. Therefore, despite eventually being appropriated under a national romanticisim, these peasant costumes demonstrated their connection with global colonial forces&nbsp; On the right are examples of woodblock printing for screenprinting, using mordant recipes from the master dyer, Michel Garcia. I use combinations of tannins, aluminium acetate, and ferrous acetate, printing with thickened dye, and immersions in dye baths. Calico printed with dyes are steamed afterwards so that they react with the mordants.&nbsp; I started using a simple ‘weave’ pattern based on the esparto weaving practiced in Spain. Weaving colours, through the layering of transparent plant pigments with opaque earth pigments is how I think of the practice of painting. The printed calicos were used to make peasant clothes and as a surface to paint on (see the section on paintings). The work has developed to into more complex patterns.&nbsp; They tell the story of the inward and outward European coloniality found in brazilwood. The patterns combine cannibals and witches, and the felling and rasping of brazilwood, and are printed and dyed with brazilwood and madder - a popular combination in the dyes of Swedish peasants. I am also experimenting with printing with indigo, which poses particular technical challenges. I am trying a recipe based on sugar and caustic soda developed by Riikka Raisanen, Anja Primetta, and Kirsi Niinimaki. When printed it looks grey, after steaming it looks brown, but after rinsing it becomes blue. <img width="3648" height="2736" width_o="3648" height_o="2736" Images include paintings for the exhibition “The Peasants are Revolting!”, at Annely Juda Fine Art, London, in 2017. Paintings were made on top of mordant-printed and dyed calicoes, in plant and earth pigments in egg tempera. Dividing the space were what I call “pleitas,” long thin paintings on panel with plant and earth pigments in a weave pattern. I clash the authorative register of the BBC presenter/academic/scientist (who is always required to give their credentials at the start of any documentary) with the humour of the peasant clown. In 2015 I invited the professional clown, David Carmel, to do a series of clown workshops with some Goldsmiths MA students and myself. David Carmel works with a practice developed by Le Coque theatre that has its origins in comedia dell ‘arte - a tradition believed to originate in early modern Italy and includes stock characters such as the clever peasant and the stupid peasant. The practice gives a strict set of rules to act as a framework for improvisation, in the process, your inner clown is birthed. <img width="3483" height="2322" width_o="3483" height_o="2322"
